As a person who completely admires Disney with all the imagination, I was completely blown away with Disney’s newest film, Beauty and the Beast. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie, ever. Belle herself is a true role model and idol for her dedication to putting her father’s needs before her own and her dedication to learning about new ideas through her reading. I thought that Emma Watson did an astounding job bringing that side of Belle to life. When I heard that Emma Watson, herself, was playing the role of Belle, I went ballistic. Emma Watson is one of my favorite actresses, and her performances prior to this film were astonishing. I had extremely high hopes in this film before I even stepped into the theatre. The only part I was not fully impressed by was not just her singing, but some of the songs in general. While Beauty and the Beast is in fact also a Broadway musical, this live-action film did not meet up to the expectations of the musical itself. Emma Watson’s voice, while truly admiring, seemed excessively autotuned for me not to notice. In the beginning with the “Belle” number, it made me feel somewhat uneasy. There was a lack of energy, and the number is not particularly my favorite. “Be Our Guest” seemed to have also lacked energy. The movie itself is primarily known for this number, and I just thought that the scene was bland. There was not as much flavor as I had hoped for.
While some of the music was not in my particular appeal, I was greatly impressed with the entire “Gaston” number, as well as the “Mob Song”. The choreography was excellent and well put together. You could feel the energy and they both were my favorite scenes throughout the entire movie. Luke Evans as Gaston was extremely admirable. Gaston is a difficult character to pull off, but he was able to grab my attention with his sensible charm.
My favorite character throughout the entire film was definitely LeFou. I have always been impressed with Josh Gad in previous films, but in Beauty and the Beast, he did a marvelous job. There was an enormous controversy with the fact that LeFou was indeed gay, but I was extremely grateful that Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise decided to take that jump and try something new. Josh Gad was amazing, and he did not make it too obvious that he was gay.
Overall, Beauty and the Beast is an amazing movie. I have only gotten the chance to see it once, but I trying to see it again. I very much enjoyed how it was not the exact same animated story from 1991, and it had a much different flavor. I have always been impressed with Disney films, but this was truly another Disney masterpiece. I highly recommend that others go and see it. I was blown away, and it was worth the wait.
